Dear all

I am writing to tell you about the new STFC senior management structure that I am putting in place with immediate effect and which the Executive Board and the Chairman of Council have agreed. The changes are intended to strengthen the senior management team and to develop STFC as a more dynamic and responsive organisation.

Following feedback from staff about our internal communications, I've tried to keep this note short and to the point. You can expect further announcements from me and my directors during coming weeks.

As Chief Executive, I will provide overall leadership and be responsible for the management and performance of STFC. I will focus on setting STFC's direction and winning the support of external stakeholders for our vision as an enabler of world-class science with social and economic impact.

Richard Wade becomes Chief Operating Officer. He is responsible for the overall operational management of STFC, and will ensure we deliver on our business objectives. Richard will continue to be a deputy chief executive and member of the STFC Council; and he will chair a new STFC Operations Board.

Colin Whitehouse becomes Director of Campus Strategy. He will focus on the new Harwell and Daresbury campuses, which are a government priority. Colin will continue as a deputy chief executive and member of the STFC Council, and he retains his responsibilities at Daresbury Laboratory.

Gordon Stewart becomes an Executive Board member and Director of Corporate and Commercial Affairs. He will engage with stakeholders about how we shape our corporate strategy and broaden our sources of income. Gordon takes over responsibility for corporate strategy from Jim Sadlier, who is due to retire in July 2008. Gordon will chair a new STFC Strategy Board.

John Womersley will take over from Richard Wade as Head of the Science Programme Office.

Liz Towns-Andrews joins the Executive Board as acting Director of Knowledge Exchange, reflecting the importance of knowledge exchange to STFC.

Andrew Taylor will continue as Director of Facility Development and Operations.

Paul Hartley will continue as Director of Corporate Services.

Jeff Down will continue as Finance Director.

Jim Sadlier will be responsible for Communications until his retirement. He will strengthen STFC's internal and external communication, develop a communication strategy and recruit his successor as Communications Director.

I will provide further information on the roles and responsibilities of the management team as they develop. The membership of the Operations Board and Strategy Board will be announced in due course.

Keith Mason
