STFC Funding Crisis: Astronomy

Mr Krispian Lowe submitted the following FoI request on 10 April 2008:

Regarding John Womersley's comment [at NAM]: ` If you cared about money you wouldn't be a scientist at all would you.'
I am interested as a scientist, how much the head of the STFC and John Womersley receive as a salary.
As the STFC and its employees are government funded, I kindly request this information under the freedom of information act.

This request prompted the following response on 13 May 08:

1. The Salary of the Head of the STFC (CEO):

The CEO's remuneration is published in our annual accounts, which we expect to be laid before Parliament before the Summer Recess. Last year's accounts for PPARC can be accessed via its Annual Report 2006/07 along with the figures for other Directors (page 21). The current CEO of STFC was previously CEO of PPARC, and in that role his salary was in the range £100,000 - £105,000. On appointment to the role of CEO of STFC, his salary was increased by 15.9% to reflect the increase in responsibilities.

2. John Womersley's salary.

John Womersley's salary is in the range £70,000 - £75,000. In addition his contract makes him eligible for a non-consolidated, non-pensionable bonus of up to 15%; in 2007/08 he received a bonus in the range 10% - 15%. John's remuneration will be published in the 2007/8 STFC annual accounts. His exact salary is exempt under section 40 of the Freedom of Information act 2000. The annual report will be published this summer.
